Skincare routine basics

Build a simple routine and learn the usual order to apply products.

A skincare routine does not need ten steps. Most people do best with three: cleanse, treat, protect. The routine that works is the one you can repeat every day without thinking about it.

Step 1: Cleanse

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry with a clean towel. Very hot water and harsh scrubbing can leave skin tight and irritated, which makes every product that follows feel worse.

Step 2: Treat

This is where a targeted cream such as Youth Face Beauty Cream goes. Apply it to clean, dry skin. A pea-sized amount covers the face; a little more if you include the neck. Massage gently until it disappears.

Step 3: Protect (mornings)

In the morning, finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Sun exposure is one of the main reasons dark spots appear and stay, so skipping sunscreen undoes much of the work of any dark-spot routine.

The usual order

A simple rule: thinnest to thickest. Watery products go first, creams next, sunscreen last in the morning. Give each layer about a minute before the next.

How long before you see a change?

Skin renews itself slowly. Use the same routine daily for several weeks before deciding whether it works for you, and compare photos taken in the same light. Changing products every few days makes it impossible to tell what is helping.

Keep it gentle

  • Patch test any new product on a small area for 24 hours.
  • Introduce one new product at a time.
  • If redness, burning or itching continues, stop and speak to a dermatologist.
